Darlington Harriers South Park 20 miler
Scott, Steve and I took on this popular 20x1mile laps of Darlington South Park on Saturday morning as they step up their prep for the New York Marathon (Scott), London Marathon (Steve) and goodness knows what marathon for myself as its looking like I can’t make it down to London due to family commitments. Both Scott and Steve will take huge confidence from this run which sets up them well for their upcoming marathons, they have both worked really hard over the past few months and fully deserve the times they are both achieving, well done gentlemen.
I on the back of a poor a few weeks of training due to a busy social life and family holidays somehow managed sub 3hr marathon pace (6.51 avg pace) for the duration of the 20 mile run. I started well and hung in with a pack consisting of 5 runners including Tracey Millmore and Steve Robertson, however fell off the back at 9 miles. In true style I held it together on my own and finished strong with a time of 2.14.30.
Here are the thoughts of Scott Brady:
Enjoyable day out in Darlington, which I would highly recommend to anyone marathon training. Well organised race, friendly volunteers and nice park, which is relatively flat helps the boredom of doing 20 laps. Now just to try and hold it for another 6 miles in a few weeks.

Simon wrote: There aren’t many opportunities to run a 10,000 metre race, and as I’d enjoyed the one we’d held at Blaydon in 2021, I was keen to give this a go too. Lining up at the start was quite daunting, usually it’s just a few laps of the track, but facing 25 times round is quite an experience in itself. However, watching the remaining laps counter go down, concentrating on regulating my pace and monitoring how my legs, knees, and lungs were holding up kept me busy.
Add to that the commentary from the announcer’s box and the encouragement from the people in the stand, especially the shouts from Louise and Eric, the time seemed to be compressed. As always in NEMAA events I was running against a group mixed ages groups and abilities, so I was keen to do as well as possible against my peers. I couldn’t keep up with the two guys 10 or more years my junior, but I did manage to maintain 3rd position from lap 1 all the way to the finish line, coming in 1 minute and 50 seconds ahead of the next runner.
A category gold medal is something I’m proud to have achieved, especially wearing the Elswick Harriers vest.
