We went to Blaydon Races ‘twas on the ninth of Joon,
Twenty hundred and twenty six on a rainy afternoon
We took the kids from Newburn an’ they were heavy laden
gannin along the Scotswood road to see the junior races.
This was the second time that the junior race was organised with chip timing and prizes. All participants received a drink and snack and a unique junior Blaydon race finishers medal.
The weather was heavy rain and a bit chilly; the seniors got the best of the weather later in the evening. Although very well organised it was very difficult for some parents and coaches to do their own race and watch the juniors. The junior course was run on a multi terrain course around Shibdon pond which was quite slippery in places.
There was an excellent turnout from all the clubs in the North East and as a result the start was quite congested. You normally have to enter early for this race as it gets oversubscribed. There was 250 spaces in race 1 and 200 spaces in race 2. With junior training cancelled, Elswick juniors had an excellent turnout. Flying the Elswick flag, well done to all for turning out after a hard day at school and also our many supporters.
There were two races – First race – one mile combined boys and girls aged eight to eleven; the second race 5K, combined boys and girls aged twelve to fifteen.
Boys 4th Jacob McCoy 17.42 – 8th Kallen O’Neil 18.39 – 15th Alfie Harvey 19.03 – 37th Josh Shane 22.23
If we have missed anyone out please shout up.
The next competition is Track and Field at Whitley Bay, North East Youth Development League (NEYDL) on Sunday 21st of June. We are hoping for a good turnout – we still have a chance of getting promoted.
Watch out for Andrea’s post on Facebook and get your name down with what discipline you would like to do, so Andrea can try and cover as many disciplines as possible.
