Elswick Harriers are proud of their tradition of being the oldest established club in the North East of England, founded in 1889. Over the years we have discovered many successful athletes including three Olympians: Mike McLeod, Alan Lillington and Alex Burns – see Our History for more information
We are based at Newburn Activity Centre, Grange Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne. The centre is situated on the edge of the Tyne Riverside Country Park and offers superb opportunities for road, off road and cross-country training in a great environment.
Our training sessions are held at Newburn Activity Centre, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, meeting at 7.00 pm in the sports hall for a prompt 7.15 pm start.
We pride ourselves on being a competitive friendly and inclusive club catering for all abilities. We have a very popular and successful Junior Section and three adult groups.

Elswick Harriers proud to host three races each year;
The Good Friday Road Relays – March/April
A popular event held the West End of Newcastle and dates back to 1966, due to ever increasing traffic the races moved to the Newburn Riverside Park.
A six-mile mid-week race is held on the second or third Wednesday in June.
The Norman Woodcock Memorial Relays – November/December
A race we’re proud to host each year, A memorial race held in the name of the great late Norman Woodcock, arguably the ‘father of Elswick Harriers‘ who kept the club afloat before during and after the Second World War.
We also have a buddying option, which means you can request to be matched up with one of our existing members who will help you settle in & support you to achieve your individual running goals. You’ll be asked if you’d like a buddy during your initial contact with us, and if you do we’ll arrange for your buddy to meet you at your first few sessions.
