Sunday 18 May – Whitley Bay – North East Youth Development League (NEYDL) second fixture

Report by Jan&Ken

How does the song go? “Oh we do like to be beside the seaside, Oh we do like to be beside the sea”.

Elswick juniors, parents, grandparents and coaches certainly did.

Even if the only sand we could see was in the long jump pit, as no steeplechase at these events we did not witness any water apart from a sea of Elswick vests. Also with a little help from our teammates from South Shields.

For the new athletes and parents who were advised to bring a picnic we forgot to mention we really ment a flask of soup and bovril, as it was really cold. Fortunately we are a hardy bunch at Elswick so most of the athletes and supporters stayed the course of the day, unlike the ice cream van who decided to cut his losses and go home early.

We had a few Elswick juniors making their track and field debuts who performed magnificently on the day; also a good few personal bests. We had 32 Elswick juniors taking part which is fantastic.

Well done to everyone who competed – this really is a team event.

Also a special thanks to the officials who give up their day on a voluntary basis, without them these meetings could not take place.

The next NEYDL is at Shildon Sunday 22nd June. If you have not done one this season, put your name down, ask your training partners and they will tell you what a fun day it is.

We cannot finish this report without a special mention for Andrea Banner for putting this all together and making this go as smooth as possible. Also good to see a few parents helping to officiate, this also scores points for us. If you feel you would like to get involved please shout up.
