How lovely is this picture! Sean Motsi and Sarah Muparutsa
Looking out of the window today – relentless rain, wind and the beginnings of Storm Debi – it’s hard to imagine the sunny conditions of yesterday’s annual Heaton Memorial 10km race incorporating the NECAA 10km and NEMAA 10km championships.
The juniors got the racing started at 9.30am with thirteen of our junior runners competing in the under 11 1km, under 13 3km and under 17 5km races picking up a number of individual and team prizes.
There was avid interest amongst our seniors who were vying to clinch a late qualifying race in the club championship. Twenty nine seniors/ vets competed, providing our championship scorer Mike with a busy Monday morning spent updating the league table.
The one minute silence was observed impeccably before the race commenced in near perfect conditions for the typically windy Town Moor race venue. Here are the Elswick results:

First woman – Sophie Pikett – 34.58 (NECAA 10km championship winner),
Fourth woman/first V40 female veteran – Justina Heslop (third in the NECAA 10km championship)
Second V55 woman – Susanne Stephenson
Second women’s team – Sophie, Justina, Felicity Smith, Andrea Banks
Second V45 man – Steven Horn (first Elswick Harrier over the line in 34.00)
Second V50 man – James Douglas (winner of the NEMAA 10km championship for V50 men)
Third V70 man – Nigel Hollier
If you’re named above and didn’t hang around for the presentation, I have your prizes and will bring them along to training on Tuesday and Thursday. Archie named me the winner of the most prizes on account of my numerous trips to the front of the presentation to collect awards.

The winner of the race was Chris Coulson of Houghton Harriers in a time of 31.04. Winning male team was from Gateshead Harriers and the winning female team was from North Shields Poly. For full results, follow the link below.

Well done to everyone who ran in this very popular event and this the penultimate race in the club championship. I look forward to our trip to Brampton and Carlisle next Sunday 19 November for the finale of the championship when our podium finishers will be revealed. Thanks to all the Elswick supporters (Jan, Ken, Bungay, Adam ) out on the course and for the numerous snap shots from Michelle and Mike Stevens.
