Weetslade relays hosted by Claremont Runners
The Weetslade Relay was the first relay event in the country where each club is required to select teams of three which must include at least one veteran and at least one lady.
The race consists of 3 legs each of 2.65 miles on a traffic free, multi terrain course. Each team of three must include a veteran and a lady. The vet and the lady can be the same person.
It includes a hill at halfway with a thirty-metre climb. There are spectacular views over Tyneside for those who had the energy to lift their head upon top of the hill of this former colliery site which operated from 1903 -1966. For anyone that wishes to read more about the site and an explosion in 1951 click on this link https://www.nmrs.org.uk/mines-map/accidents-disasters/northumberland/weetslade-colliery/
Six teams were the maximum a club could enter and after many changes to the line ups in the days prior as well as also on the day mainly due to injuries and illnesses Elswick were still able to field 6 teams on a warm evening with bright blue skies. In our camp we have credible experience across the board, and it was great listening to our members share their experience of this race with others who hadn’t previously ran this event.
The 18 Elswick runners on the night again proved their strength as they battled towards the hill on a stony dusty track to reach the summit with those stunning views before hitting the fast downhill tarmac section. However once runners had reached the furthest part of the course to return home, it wasn’t all plain sailing as they faced a breezy head wind which made the final mile tough. Fantastic work from all as you’ll see by the results below, and thank you for understanding that there were so many changes to teams. Thanks to Scott for arranging and dealing with the challenges faced which included bringing his 2 kids along to hand out numbers as well as looking after my youngest whilst I ran.
Claremont runners stated on their website “Thanks for supporting our race, and our chosen charity this year, Tyneside Welcomes, an organisation that welcomes refugees to our area”

David took time to message saying “Today I did the inaugural Brighton Trail marathon, organised by the regular Brighton road marathon team. It was almost all off-road on the South Downs. After a bit of a challenge getting there on Saturday during the rail strike, I turned up at Brighton East Park on Sunday for the 8:30am start. It was a boiling day on the south coast. 26.6 miles and 4,300 feet of ascent, I managed to finish in 5:53, within my target of sub-6, 617th out of 1,484. Thoroughly recommended.

Lambton 10k organised by the Foundation of Light
The 10k course is a mixed terrain, rural undulating course taking in the countryside scenes from BBC Drama The Paradise, including the magnificent Lambton Castle.
Ben Hall who took part in the event took time out to make the following comments:
“This run is starting to become one of our regulars in the running calendar. It’s a lovely but challenging 10km of mixed terrain (tarmac, loose gravel, grass, and trail) with plenty ups and downs…
If you’ve done the cross country here, you’ll know one of the hills 😫
We had three Elsweegins running; myself, Mary Hall, and Imogen King. With Mary just pipping Imogen – both ladies done amazing!
It offers a 3km option which would be perfect for our juniors and is well marshalled and signposted. This certainly isn’t a PB course but is a nice route that you can run well on or just enjoy the surroundings.
T-shirt for all finishers along with other goodies, and snack van to replenish those calories at the end. The race is arranged by the Foundation of Light, Sunderland’s FC own foundation.
Field size 178
21st Ben Hall 44.01
53rd Mary Hall 51.24
59th Imogen King 52.28 & 3rd female u23
