Weekly Round Up 3rd July to 9th July

There were two mid week races this week the Bridges of Tyne and Tynedale 10km both saw brilliant performances from our runners.

Bridges of the Tyne

It was Luke Hillard who was first home for Elswick, finishing in 9th place overall – the ‘bridges’ is a quick 5 miler starting and finishing on the Newcastle Quayside, its established itself as a favourite for runners with entries selling out as soon as its opens. Fresh from the Great North 10km Luke and Sean recorded superb times. Dave Jones was next up to nab 5 min PB Roland Brown followed him home in a conservative time, still nursing a hamstring injury, a brilliant run considering!

Well done all!

Tynedale Pie and Peas 10km

It was Scott Brady who was first home for Elswick, closely followed by the very talented Imogen Bungay. This race has one of the fastest starts going, with 1 mile downhill, it can make or break your race if you go off too quick… Our runners looked to judge it well with Scott and Imogen both finishing inside the top 20, Imogen 2nd female. Susanne Stephenson, continuing her comeback finishing 1st in her category – what a run! Nigel Hollier was next up finishing 2nd in the v70 category followed by ultrarunner and marathon man Dave Hodgson. Well done all!

Woodhorn Triathlon

On Saturday we saw brothers Adam and Andrew on the starting line of the Woodhorn Triathlon, hoping to qualify for the 2024 European Championship.

“The Sprint Distance Triathlon is an Age Group Qualifier for the 2024 European Championship.

The Woodhorn Museum triathlon is located within the picturesque historic scheduled ancient monument of Woodhorn Museum and the QE2 Country park. The swim will be in the warm shallow freshwater QE2 lake set within the park grounds. The bike route will take you out from the Museum along the beautiful Northumbrian coastal route along the picturesque villages of Druridge Bay and Cresswell with some breath-taking views along the coastline. The run will be on the footpath that winds its way through the woodland and open grasslands that surround the lake. The run passes by the finish line within the Museum at the end of each lap making this ideal for spectators to cheer everyone on to a great finish with a big smile”

Setting off in different waves the brothers wouldn’t have been able to chase each other down, incredible they finished seconds apart, finishing 11th and 12th overall with Adam finishing 1st in his category. It’s a waiting game to see if they qualify for the for the 2024 European Championship.

Northern Track and Field League

Sunday was our 3rd summer fixture – Eric worked tirelessly throughout the week to organise the teams and gave us all a rousing team talk on Sunday morning… It done the trick as our athletes took to the track and field with some outstanding performances.

James Douglas called it right, athlete of the day was Sue Lewis as she threw, jumped and ran the maximum events and wanted to do more. James himself alongside Scott, pushed their bodies to the limits competing in 3 events each; both doing 800m and 5000m with James going for steeplechase and Scott the 1500m.

Sophie Pickett blew the field away with an amazing run in the 1500m finishing with a time of 4 minutes 30 seconds – tremendous running!

It was great to see Charlie Katsighiras-Welton back in action, he was like lightening on his 200m and followed that up in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

Sunday saw impressive debuts in Elswick vests for Grant Henderson and Fin Lewis – both competing in multiple events and doing amazing in each. Old timers Eric Lewis, Paul Taylor and Ben Hall also competed in the multiple events to pick up vital points for the team.

Provisional results show the team finished in 3rd on the day and we sit 3rd in the league overall.
