All quiet on the north east front again this week.
However, there was the final NEMAA meet of the track season at Monkton Stadium, and we did manage to sneak in another little race for the club championship, and then Lewis headed down to Mercia to spread the light of Northumbria.
NEMAA Track and Field #6
The culmination of the track and field season was held at Monkton on Monday 22nd August with almost the whole world running in one of the multitude of heats of 800 metres or 200 metres.
Simon Allen and Eric Lewis ran in heat 6 (of 8) coming in 2nd (2:36.3) and 6th (2:46.2) respectively.
Louise Allen finished her sprint season with a creditable time of 33.1 (3rd) in heat 7 of 12.
Eric also squeezed in a triple jump of 7.74m, coming 1st in the V60 category, and 21.30m in the discus, 2nd V60 on the day (but 1st from NEMAA).

Unfortunately we came bottom of the league for both men’s and women’s teams because we only had a full team once for the men and twice for the women during the entire season.

Watergate 5k inc NEMAA 5k Trail
Watergate Park in Gateshead is the home of Low Fell Running Club’s popular trail 5k, and as in previous years, it was one of Elswick’s club championship events.
23 intrepid club members made their way to Lobley Hill on Thursday, 25th August to do their best against each other, and the north east running fraternity, around a very attractive park resurrected from the former colliery.
Every runner did really well, but there were some significant results.
Of the men, Steve Horn was 1st V40, Mark Turnbull was 1st V50 and won the gold NEMAA medal. Simon Allen was 1st V55 and NEMAA gold medallist, Paul Robinson took 3rd place V45, while Sean Motsi, in his debut in the Elswick vest, was 2nd Under 21 (superb work, Sean).
It doesn’t stop there, we had some superb performances from the women too. Imogen Bungay ran a blinder, coming in as 2nd female and 1st Under 17 woman. Debbie Spoor continued her impressive form in 1st V50, Imogen King was 1st Under 21 and her sister Simone King, a recent addition to the club, was 2nd Under 17. Finally, Louise Allen was NEMAA silver medal winner in V50 category.
It’s worth mentioning that when there are this many members running in the same race it’s amazing how we push each other in a way that doesn’t happen otherwise. Simon Allen, Paul Taylor, and Richard Houghton made up a triumvirate that did just that. Richard was determined not to be outpaced by Paul at one point. While Paul had to work hard to not drop back when Simon overtook him at about the 3k mark. And then Paul went past Simon on the home strait to finish just behind Richard.
Furthermore, we had good team results. 2nd Women’s Team (Imogen Bungay, Debbie Spoor, Eden Ratcliffe).
And 3rd Men’s Team (Daniel Spoor, Steven Horn, Mark Turnbull).

Mid Cheshire 5k inc EA Road Championships
A favourite for 5k PB chasers this race is fiercely contested by a classy field predominantly drawn from some super clubs in the north west and north Wales. There are one or two travelling interlopers, including our own Lewis Liddle.
The course is a circular route on roads starting in the village of Kingsley, not far from Frodsham, and has been hosting the England Athletics 5k championships since 2017.
Continuing to build his strength and speed Lewis attained another 5k PB of 15:25 – well done Lewis, keep up the good work.
