Race Roundup – 15th to 21st August

The north east race calendar and Elswick members seemed seemed to take a little breath this week, with fewer events and entries.

However, Sunday 21st was an exception with a couple of longer distance gatherings to report on.

Lambton Estate Trail 10 Miler

Intrepid as ever our single entrant into this race was David Hodgson. The course is on trails and estate roads around Lambton Castle and is described as “gently undulating” – not like the cross country course then! Or maybe it’s that understated description we often hear about from those who want us to enter a run that requires ropes and crampons.

David Hodgson was the Elswick Harriers representative at the Wild Deer Lambton Trail 10 miler on Sunday, finishing 92/155 in 1:44.

After 2 weeks all inclusive in Mexico I needed a steady-away hilly trail race to blow the cobwebs away. I feel much better for it and enjoyed the lovely route that you can rarely access unless you’re running a race. Next up: Stanhope 10 miler road race next Sunday.

David Hodgson

Well done , David.

Jelly Tea 10 Mile Road Race

The seventh race in the Elswick Harriers Club Championship this year saw a wonderful turnout of the famous red and white vests.

This was the first of two 10 milers in the championship – something of an unusual distance nowadays.

Our club secretary Sean Mennim reports:

Sunday 21st August saw the return of the popular annual Tynedale Harriers’ 10-mile “Jelly Tea” Race, which runs from Ovingham Middle School towards Bywell and back again.

There was an impressive turnout from Team Elswick which saw 21 of our athletes powering their way around this undulating rural course. Notwithstanding the glorious sunshine and spectacular views, the course was made particularly challenging by brutal inclines and brisk headwinds throughout.

244 runners completed the course, with 11 runners coming in under the hour, including our very own Luke Hilliard (5th – 57:21) and Danny Spoor (10th – 59:08 (PB). In the Men’s V55, Martin Connelly came 3rd (1:08:51).

In the women’s race, Amy Fuller battled it out for 2nd place in the (1:04:40). In the V45 category, Felicity Smith earned 2nd place (1:10:23), 59th overall, closely followed by Andrea Banner in the V50 (1st – 1:10:47), Arabella Pearce (2nd – 1:15:50) and Debbie Spoor (3rd – 1:16:48).

As is tradition, all finishers were treated to the legendary post-race meal of sandwiches, a pot of jelly and drinks.

Sean Mennim

The strength of the team at Elswick continues to impress, with the women coming 1st (Amy, Felicity, Andrea), and the men placing 2nd (Luke, Danny, Sean).

There were some superb efforts by the Elswick squad that show some impressive times and obvious gains.
