NEMAA Track and Field @ Monkton – Match 3
Louise Allen took time to write this piece about the evenings event:
Eric Lewis, Mark McNally, Simon Allen and I competed in a few events on a warm but quite blustery night.
Mary Avery came down to spectate and catch up with a few of her running friends.
Chatting to lots of runners from different clubs and clapping until your hands are sore is always on the cards. It’s a fun and supportive group to be part of.
Simon and I were in the same race for the 400m and as he only had 10 minutes between finishing the 3,000m and getting into lane for the 400m I thought that I would benefit from him having tired legs; but no, he walloped me by 7 seconds. Next time!
Eric was on top form going from one event to the next as he always does at these events. Trying to pin him down for a photograph is always a challenge.
It was good to see Mark McNally run in the 3,000m and we even managed to hand over his V70 Road Championship trophy that we’d kept safely in our house for a few months.
Roll on Monday 18th July for League Match 4!
Eric Lewis also had some words to say about the 4 Elswick Harriers out on Monday night for the master’s grand prix match number 3 at Jarrow:
Simon and Louise Allen were both there, Simon coming 3rd in his age group for both the 3000m and 400m in times of 11m.27, and 70.1 seconds respectively. Louise came an extremely close second in the 100m with 16 seconds dead, and then a first in her age group with 77.2 seconds in the 400m
No surprise, and great to watch Mark McNally in his heat of the 3000m coming in first in his age group in 13.05. I fared slightly less well in my own heat of the 3000m coming in last in the heat and 4th out of 4 in my age group… However, the timings of my heat this time allowed for a reasonable performance in high jump and triple jump (8.49m) giving me first place in both in my age group and keeping me at the top of the grand prix standings so far.
Looking forward to competing in the senior league match this Sunday at the all new stadium2000 in Shildon. It would be great to see some more of the U17s and seniors alike trying an event or two as we have struggled a bit with numbers so far this season. So, any additional interest is warmly welcomed – just get in touch with anyone in the club who can pass names/events to me.
Proud and now paid-up owner of my new Elswick vest!

Bridges of the Tyne 5-mile race hosted by Tyne Bridge Harriers
There are not many 5-mile races that take place in the North East, and this one always sells out really fast. Tyne Bridge Harriers hugely popular race returned to Newcastle Quayside in 2022. It’s a fast, mainly flat, out & back 5-mile course along the quayside passing the iconic bridges of the Tyne.
Our ever-improving Jayne Cuskern had these words to say about the night:
This evening we finally got to participate in the bridges 5-mile road race hosted by Tyne Bridge Harriers. This was another race that had been rolled over from 2020. Tonight, we had perfect weather for it, and it was a strong field racing. It was lovely to see other Elswick runners out there looking so strong, well done. Tough course out but lovely running back, passing all the bridges on the way to the finish. Lovely atmosphere with the added cheers from the customers in the passing pubs.
The club would also like to congratulate Imogen on gaining a silver medal as this event incorporated the NECAA 5 mile championships.

Tynedale Pie and Peas 10k
After a two-year absence the Tynedale Harriers ‘Pie n Peas’ 10k came back to life! A fast and flat course with a tasty helping of Pie and Peas at the end. The course starts in Ovington finishing at the Tyne Riverside Park at Low Prudhoe.
The second 10k of our club championships saw 14 Elswick Harriers take on this fast but windy course on a cloudy mild evening along the banks of the stunning River Tyne. We say fast and it’s certainly a fast first mile coming out of Ovington however it’s not totally flat probably more undulating with a few cheeky short sharp inclines along the route one of which climbs into Wylam then other up towards Hagg Bank just after the half-moon bridge. Many of us train along some of these sections regularly so it was nice to race on kind of home soil.
For the first time ever in all these years of racing I accidentally left my vest at home. I didn’t realise this until it came to put my number on the front. After calling my wife she had found it in the washing machine! After a slight panic as club vests must be worn for club championship races I contacted Ben Hall who came to my rescue as he only lives a short distance away. Thank you Ben for acting so promptly to supply me with a vest and pins.
Despite the head wind and undulation from 4 miles where it became challenging at times this didn’t stop young Daniel Spoor in his tracks as he continues to impress, his development along with Sean and Johnathan’s over the past few months is just unreal, well-done lads. Unfortunately for Luke on the night who had made a ferocious start had to withdraw after just shy of 2 miles due to breathing difficulties, Im very confident Luke will bounce back from this minor setback.
Looking at the age group results a huge well done to our runners Debbie Spoor, Louise Allen and Melissa Bateson who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively although prizes for the race were for the top 2 in each age category.
Simon Allen as you will have read previously in the results also ran 2 races Monday so the time, he achieved at this event was fantastic being not on fresh legs. Paul Robinson, I have huge admiration for as he always turns up and works his socks off and that’s all we can ask of any runner. David Hodgson completed the Elswick Harriers line up with his 2nd race in 2 days as he also ran the Bridges of the Tyne 5 mile race. However, I’m sure these races are to short and easy for David as he often likes running the hardest trail marathons in the UK.
We welcomed Charlie Katsighiras-Welton who made is Elswick debut in the famous red and white vest. Charlie was aiming for sub 40 so the pre-race plan he was to stick alongside me and he did just that as he was glued to my side until the last 500m when the shackles came. After that performance I’m sure this young man is in line for great things, small steps and keep knocking chunks of time off at each race, that way it gives you something to aim at and motivate yourself for.

Chopwell Woods 10k hosted by Wild Deer Events
It’s been three years since Wild Deer’s first ever event, they returned to Chopwell Woods in Gateshead for their annual 10k. This event was run alongside the Gateshead Duathlon Events.
With some testing trails and some fabulous scenery this run will challenge every runner with 717ft of elevation gain. More challenging was the heat even though this race started at 9am and even more challenging than that, the night before someone had taken a saw to the route signs meaning the race director was somewhat stressed as you can well imagine.
Shout out to David Hodgson who has taken part in 3 races this week. And to James Sunley who made his Elswick Harrier debut, well done to you both.
Thanks to James for sharing his thoughts on this event, here they are:
It was a good well organised race that was well sign posted despite signage having to be set up again on the morning of the race due to someone cutting down the signs and throwing them into the bushes during the night!
For me it was my first race since March and my first since joining Elswick so was more about getting a race done than anything else. I ran the 10K but at the same time there was the Duathlon and the Sprint Duathlon which meant a lot of people heading off in different directions as the race went on.
As anyone who has ran in Chopwell will know, running from the car park means there will be a lot of downhills near the start of the run, which inevitably means a mostly uphill second half of the run. Which with the addition of the heat meant for some hard work towards the end of the run.
All in all, a good race with me finishing in 57:30, by no means a PB but I will happily use the excuse of heat and hills!
Field size 83
26th James Sunley 57.08 and 3rd male aged 20-29
38th David Hodgson 1.01.30

Track and Field North East 1 League, 3rd fixture @ Stadium 2000, Shildon.
Here is an overview on the Elswick members that took part in a joint team with Blaydon Harriers that currently sit in 6th position from 8 teams.
Thank you to all that committed your time to turn out at a very warm meet at Shildon, true dedication to the cause with exceptional performances from you all. Just look at Eric and the events he takes part in, Justin rarely trains with the seniors however I would like to see him become more involved as he is a real talent. Charlie has had a great week in the Elswick vest, always good to try different events at a young age as you may stumble across an event which you could potentially become very strong in. Our field starts of Sky and Su-Wan threw their hearts out whilst Andrea ran 7.5 laps in the 3000m race which must have been very hot and demanding on the tartan track, well done to you.
