Clive Cookson 10k hosted by North Shields Poly

Clive Cookson is a 2-lap flat and fast chip timed 10k. Start and finish at Monkseaton High School, Whitley Bay – The terrain is mainly road and paths, with some of the course on gravel paths.

The description reads a flat and fast 10k, well with 178ft of elevation gain and a wind thrown in, our runners felt that wasn’t the case. The incline on the start of the 2nd lap does catch a few people out which seems to be gradual climb along Rake Lane for well over 1km. You don’t really notice it on the first lap when you feel fresh and within a group.

However, there were some exceptional outings from 2 runners that gained a pb, Luke Hilliard and Reece Dorward with the latter knocking over 3 minutes off his previous 10k pb. No wonder with how much weight he has lost, great to see you both working hard at different ends of the spectrum and representing the club with pride. Andrew Ball and Mark Turnbull again are quite some force in the area for their respective age groups, again both picking up age group awards. Mike Russell works tirelessly and is consistent as ever and then Imogen who found the night tough and wanted to withdraw during the race. Imogen stuck at it and ground it out and this run will develop her mental resilience to dig deep when she gets these feelings within a race. Rich again continues to put building blocks in place, which is likewise to Lee Coulson, fitness is easy to lose but challenging to gain. Robyn found it tough after running 6 races within 18 days but again saw it out with Simon Allen who with his injury woes always puts in a solid performance. Louise Allen crossed the line with her face being the same colour as her pink visor, just goes to she worked out there on a warm evening. Nigel Hollier who I have never met before was happy with his performance.

Proud to announce that the Elswick men also picked up 3rd place team consisting of Luke, Andrew, Mark and Mike. Well done to all that ran and thanks to those that popped along to support and take snapshots. Always a great shirt to be collected when you reach the finish line.

Tom was the race adjudicator for the evening and shortly after the race he mentioned that out on the course someone had collapsed. An update is that the person had underlying heart problems but was ok by the time Tom left. The person went to hospital for checks.

Solway Coast Marathon

The route starts and finishes at The White Heather Hotel. This course is best described as one of the flattest marathon courses in the UK and is a must for anyone looking for a PB. The roads are quiet country roads and very flat. The course takes you on a 5-mile loop through Kirkbride, Newton Arlosh and back past the start where family and friends will be able to cheer you on and give the encouragement for 21 miles to come. The course then heads back out through Kirkbride and on to the Solway Coast taking in Glasson, Port Carlisle, Bowness on Solway, Cardurnock, Anthorn, Longcroft then back to Newton Arlosh and on to the finish at The White Heather Hotel.

After months of consistent training and getting out on those long Sunday runs with no marathon planned Steve opted to take the plunge and registered for the Solway Coast Marathon. Since my time at the club this must be the best batch of training he has churned over, consistency and dedication are paramount and that earned him with the recent race times he has ran. Fine lines between finishing slow or strong, pacing and knowing what your body is capable of has to be on the money, it’s all about experience and Steve has plenty of it. However there comes a time when the body says no not today, unfortunately Steves calf knotted at 18 miles, he tried to push and continue whilst attempting to stretch it off, but it wasn’t to be. Steve made the difficult decision to withdraw just after 21 miles and catch a lift back to start area with a first aider. Chin up and look ahead to the London Marathon in October.

Great Manchester Run – 10k hosted by the Great Run Company

Starting on Portland Street the10k route takes runners out of the city past Old Trafford and back into the city centre finishing on Deansgate

Breaking 32mins was not to be on this run, he went through 5k in 16.09 and he felt he faded away at 4 miles with nothing left in the tank. All in all, it’s a great experience and we must go through setbacks to get to the places we wish to be, and when we reach them, they become special moments. However, it’s still important to finish these races as dropping out when times you had in mind are not possible can result in bad habits, very proud that on the day he ground it out and crossed the finish line still with a very respectable time.

Run Northumberland Alnwick Castle Trail 10k

Hosted by Northumberland Estate in Hulne Park near to Alnwick Castle.

Take in the beautiful scenery of this historic setting while competing in a 5k, 10k or Junior 2k.

The 10k is one loop around the scenic park on paths and farm tracks. Luke Hilliard ran an awesome race from start to finish as is becoming a strong contender when he lines up on the start line. Luke described this as a tough race, in which he struggled to get into a rhythm. He was neck and neck but manged to create daylight in between him and 2nd place on the last hill. The amount off hill training Luke undertakes is certainly paying off.

Luke wasn’t the only Elswick Harrier present as he was joined by Sarah Muparutsa who continues to improve under the guidance of Simon Allen, Felicity smith and Micky Shore. It’s great to see Sarah donning the Elswick vest once again. After some time away she came back to support her children through our None to Run programme and now she’s returned to form with an excellent finish, well done Sarah.

Ironman Marbella 70.3

An event that Rob should have taken part in in 2020. I honestly take my hat of to anyone that trains and completes an Ironman, such an incredible achievement.

The one-loop 1.9 km (1.2 mile) swim course in the Mediterranean Sea starts and finishes on the amazing Levante beach of Puerto Banús. After heading straight out, there will be one left and two right turns to bring you back to the swim exit.

The hilly one-loop 90 km (56 mile) bike course starts at the famous “Gold Mile” before crossing through the city of Marbella. Athletes will race through Monda, Coín and Cartama before returning to transition in Puerto Banús.

The two-loop 21.1 km (13.1 mile) run course leads along the promenade of Marbella. Run with the Mediterranean in your view and cheered on by the spectators along the road as you finish your race near the sea.

Unfortunately for Rob when he arrived at the top of mountain, he started having mechanical problems with gears jumping, chain started coming off, then on the descent with 17k to go he was dealt another blow with a rear puncture. Then his gas canister failed to blow tyre up which then meant he had a decision to make either DNF or ride last kms on a flat tyre. All credit to Rob as he chose to carry on. 1.9km swim – 50.46, 90km cycle – 4.09.47, 21.1km run – 2.13.27, Total time – 7.26.30

Warmseal Northumberland Festival of Sport hosted by V02 Max @ Druridge Bay

The swim will take place in the warm shallow freshwater Ladyburn Lake set within the park grounds. The bike route will take you out of the Country Park along a beautiful coastal route and the run will be a multi-lap route on the footpath that winds its way through the woods and meadows that surround the lake. Absolutely brilliant to see Arabella and Mark take to the podium at this event, there is so much work that goes on behind the scenes to run a triathlon, its very pleasing to see you get what your fully deserve. Even the athletes that didn’t make the podium they produced excellent performances which resulted in brilliant times.
