Norman Woodcock Relays hosted by Elswick Harriers at Newcastle Racecourse

Since 1974, the 10 km road race took place around Westerhope, in memory of Norman Woodcock, the ‘ father of Elswick Harriers‘ who kept the club afloat before during and after after the Second World War. Due to metro rail line extension work in 1989, the course was moved to Gosforth High Park. This 10 km course ran through the park and out onto the roads around High Park. Due to significant increases in vehicle traffic, it was necessary to move the course once again. So in 2009, the club successfully utilised the ambulance road inside Gosforth Race Course. Three, 1.66 mile laps of this ‘track’ made the Woodcock race a 5 mile event distance. During 2017 the club re-formatted the event to a team relay: A very successful day sees this new format continue to honour Norman Woodcock and the memorial trophy named after him.
The race over its history has had many famous winners including Brendan Foster, Steve Cram, Paul Davies-Hale, and Elswick’s Oylmpic athlete Mike McLeod who has won it on no less than 10 occasions! More recently Andrew Butchart, Elswick’s Philip Hurst and Morpeth’s Nick McCormark have been recent winners of the open road race format.
On what was a windy afternoon at the racecourse the club rightly so dedicated this day in memory of Colin Bolton. Johnny Bolton was present to collect the retired A1 bib number which now takes pride pf place in the family home. We thank all the club volunteers and timekeepers for coming together to make the event a success.

Brampton to Carlisle 10-mile road race hosted by Border Harriers
The Wm Coulthard & Co Ltd Brampton to Carlisle 10 Mile Road Race organised by Border Harriers & Athletic Club is the oldest 10-mile road race in the United Kingdom. The first race was completed in 1952. The course takes the competitors from William Howard School in Brampton to the south end of Eden Bridge Carlisle via the B6264 and is fast. Previous winners include Steve Cram and Ron Hill.
After a chaotic unorganised start the event ran smoothly in perfect cool conditions with the sun shining brightly over the Northwest. If the organisers chose to introduce chip timing to this event this would help the start line fiasco which would see runners starting from the middle/back of the pack running faster chipped times. However this didn’t faze our runners from having strong outings with Andrew and Scott running PBs whilst Judith, Susanne and Kim picked up age group prizes.
