Juniors Report – NEYDL on 16th May 2021

Well after a very difficult period due to coronavirus, Elswick Juniors finally came together in a competitive environment. This was the ideal opportunity for the juniors to try different track and field events. The meeting took place at Churchill playing fields at Whitley Bay. The weather was not the best but the atmosphere certainly was. With a cold swirling wind it was not a day for personal bests. It was great to see so many young athletes, parents and grandparents taking in the day. This was the first meeting of a 3 series of meetings the other two both held at Whitley Bay are Sunday 20/06/21 and Saturday 17/07/21 .
We are a joint team with South Shield , the other teams are Birtley/Tynebridge – Blaydon – Jarrow/Phoenix Flyers – Tynedale – Gosforth/Wallsend. We finished 4th team at this event, hopefully with even more Juniors competing at the next events we can finish higher.

Due to coronavirus the organisation was even more difficult than usual with no access to the track for spectators we had to stay on the outside field in allocated pens. The NEYDL officials did a fantastic job to make sure this meeting went smoothly.
A special mention must go to Kerrie Old. This line has been used before but as Tom Hanks says in the film a field of dreams “Build it and they will come” and Kerrie certainly did that. First one there last one to leave organising age groups and events, taking names the list goes on. From all the Junior coaches, young athletes and spectators thank you Kerrie.

Cheers
