It is with heartfelt sadness that I inform our club members, that one of our own, Steve Grey, died on Tuesday of this week. Our sincere condolences go to the Grey family.
Steve was an accomplished Elswick Harrier runner. Many of today’s members will probably not know of Steve Grey the athlete.
In the time he was with our club, he trained and competed regularly, as an individual and as Team Relay Member, both of which, he competed successfully, with then, team mates, Lee Bennett, Martin Connelly, John Bell, Kevin Stephenson, Myself, Alan ‘Rambo’ Thompson and Paul Dixon. Steve was part of a strong vet team.
Steve was also an accomplished marathon runner: As a V40, Steve ran London a couple of times in under 2.45. To complement the miles of distance training he was a regular member of the track squad who trained every Monday evening with ‘the lads’ along with Jude Nutt, Yam Thiru and Gina Capocci, Alison Dargie, with coaches Colin Bolton and Norman Armstrong. A great squad of Elswick Athletes track training. Happy times. Due to knee problems he had to retire from the sport (and the club) around 7 years ago. He turned his love of sport to cycling and quickly became an accomplished Vet Time Triallist with Derwentside CC. Steve was a lovely gent, quietly spoken, but trained and competed honourably in the spirit of ameatur competition. I think the club’s motto summarises nicely who Steve was when he ran:
Committed, Determined, Passionate. Steve was a gentlemen and proud when he wore the Elswick Vest.
A card will be available to sign next Tuesday evening (18th) in the sports hall.

I only knew Steve briefly as a runner- when he took to cycling our paths crossed occasionally on the Derwent Walk. He always made a point of shouting encouragement. My partner shared a meta fit class with him at Rowlands Gill Gym and found him similarly helpful. A genuine nice guy- can this be passed on to his family?
Steve was a truly nice bloke, I did MANY miles running and also cycling with him as we were both members of Derwentside cycling club. If anyone would like to attend his funeral it is on Friday 28th of December at 10.15 at Mountsett crematorium in Dipton.
