We can now announce the format for the championship this year. With some spring races already sold out, these have been avoided and we have worked around the dates of the postponed NEHL cross country fixtures which will now be taking place in March.
For 2020 there will be a two event championship. Runners can decide to run in one or both championships.
The first is a road and trail championship. There are 7 races to choose from.
Up to 4 races will count for the Championships.
You can run more than 4 races, BUT only your best 4 results will count towards your qualifying races.
Enter races in good time – as we know, some events can sell out. Here are the races:
DATE RACE/LOCATION DISTANCE/RACE TYPE
Saturday 21 March Newcastle Park Run, Town Moor 5k
Sunday 26 April Terry O’ Gara memorial 5k
Sunday 17 May Pier to Pier, S Shields 7 mile trail race
Thursday 9 July Sunderland 5k
Sunday [16] August Tynedale Jelly Tea 10 mile
Sunday 8 November Heaton Memorial 10k
Saturday [20] December Saltwell 10k
AGE CATEGORIES for both women and men: Senior, V40, V50, V60, V70
SCORING – The first Elswick harrier in each age category is awarded 15 points, second will receive 14 points and so on. If there are more than 15 participants in an age category, all positions from 15th onwards will score 1 point.
To encourage participation in a range of distances/race types, a bonus point will be awarded the first time you complete a race from each of the race types, namely 5k, 10k or trail. You will keep these bonus point even if the race does not end up counting as one of your best 4.
The second championship is the Cross Country Championships which will be based upon participation in the 6 NEHL fixtures between September to March, the December North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships and the January Sherman Cup & Davison Shield. Similar to the road/trail championship, your best 4 scoring races will count towards your end result with the same age categories applying.
More details of the events including the dates and venues of the cross country races, and the rules of the club championship will be featured in the Championship section of the website in due course.
