Weekly race round up – 13th January to 19th January.

Road races are back on the agenda…

Newcastle 10km

A race that seems very popular with over 2000 runners taking to the quayside, competing in two separate races.

In the B Race, Nigel Hollier and Rob Coulson were our only representatives. Nigel topped the podium in his age group coming 1st v70. Rob, hopefully putting the Newcastle defeat behind him, followed him home with a good run.

Brass Monkey

14 of our athletes travelled to York for the popular half marathon.

Despite the freezing weather, the race went ahead without problems and runners clocked some amazing times with the winner finishing in 65 mins…

Gary Young was our first home with an incredible run, running 1.23. I believe this is Gary’s first half marathon – huge well done.

Mick Wilson, first time in the Elswick vest also had an amazing running clocking 1.26 and recording an impressive PB!

Kisi Hardman had a superb run, knocking 2 minutes off her PB – very well down Kisi.

The times everyone else ran is incredible giving many are just back after injury or still carrying knocks or illness. It goes to show what a hearty and determined lot we have!

Huge well done to you all!

NEHL Wrekenton

We rallied the troops and 25 (11 women and 14 men) rocked up to a frozen field in Gateshead…

It’s been too long since our last NEHL fixture, so our athletes were just thrilled to be out in the sub zero temperatures. It was fun cheering on everyone, all wrapped up with hat and gloves on…

Anyways, as usual our women were on fine form, Justina led the team home, with Bella, Mary and Debbie making up the rest of the counting team. Incredible Run by Justina running from the fast pack and Bella from medium. Mary continued her fine form to hold off Debbie and finish just behind Bella.

Following them home were Gillian, Felicity, Laura and Rachel, Caroline Lynne and Imogen.

Well done lasses and thanks for the sweet treats at the end… yummy!

In the men’s race, Callum had a cracking run and will be rewarded to a promotion to the fast pack in his next fixture. David King was next in with another brilliant run, he too will be rewarded with a promotion for the next race. Dave Jones was our next counter, he claims he doesn’t like off-road running but this was some run by Dave! There wasn’t much to separate our next three counters, Iain, Joe and Will making up the team.

It was great to see Pete making his first NEHL of the season, and Martin making his first appearance for 13 years – I have photos Martin, this did happen!

David Wilson ran very well, finishing ahead of Dom who also claims not to like XC. Rob Lambert was next up with debutant Chris Hopkinson, running his first race as an Elswick Harrier following him into the finish.

Peter Jobson also ran, now v65, Peter chose to run the two lap option. It’s great seeing Peter back in action.

Special mention goes to John Rippon, who won’t show on the results despite running… John decided to run in his 2023/24 XC number… I know we don’t like aging but wearing last years number isn’t going to let you run in a younger age category…

We still have lots of numbers still to be collected so please come and run in the remaining fixtures to help us retain our places in the leagues. And, if anyone that isn’t registered and wants to take part, please let me know.

Club Championship Race Change

A slight change to the club championships races – we’re bringing forward the start of the champs to include the Cowbell 5km.

The Cowbell 5km will replace our previously advertised internal 5km in October. The October slot will remain free and will be used if a scheduled race is cancelled or clashes with a XC.

The Cowbell 5km is scheduled for the 8th of March. Click for information

Note: if the cancelled XC’s of Driridge Bay or Prudhoe are rearranged for a date close to this fixture we’ll revert back to the October Internal 5km.
