Weekly Race Report – 2 – 8 September 2024

Saturday 7 September – England Masters 2024 Inter Area Outdoors Track and Field Challenge, Corby
Only in her second season of track and field competition, Hazel Bough achieved such good times at middle distance that she gained selection to represent the northeast in the England Masters Track and Field Challenge which took place at the Rockingham Triangle Athletics Stadium, Corby.

It was a tough competition given that Hazel was running against athletes ten years her junior, but she managed to finish on the podium yet again. She took silver in the 800m in a time of 2.24 and bronze in the 1500m in a time of 5.01 with being personal best times (and that was before she took part in the 3000m). Over the course of this season, she has improved her times in both 800m and 1500m by c.10 seconds. Incredible progress earnt by true dedication and determination.
Hazel only put herself forward for selection on account of her plan to be in Corby on Sunday to watch her partner Michelle compete in the Vitruvian Triathlon, which goes to show it’s always worth looking for a nearby race when you’re travelling out of the area. Michelle (Elswick’s resident event photographer), was second fastest female in her age category in the swim. A very productive and successful weekend in Corby.

Congratulations and well done Hazel and Michelle.

Sunday 8 September – Great North Run 2024
An event which needs no introduction, especially if you live in the northeast. But what the heck, here’s a little poem which Nigel Hollier came across.

This event means so much to so many people but especially those taking on the half marathon for the first time. Congratulations to Jonathan Morell, Maxine Cottam, Imogen King, Grant Henderson, Fior Sayer, Joanne Forster, Jack Graham and Gillian Johnson who made their GNR/half marathon debuts on Sunday – the first of many more we hope.

Lots of personal goals were achieved and wonderful memories made. Of note, our first ever T20 GNR participant is Imogen King. Whatever next Imogen?! Many thanks to Simon Allen for being her guide runner.

Nigel Hollier continues to inspire us with his sub 2 hour time at the age of 72. Susanne amazed herself by achieving a time of 1.35, quicker than she was achieving before her leg operation. Lee Coulson achieved a pb in 1.34 proving that training with our talented juniors does have its benefits. Andrea Banks and Joanne Brown have overcome long term injuries to achieve 1.30 1and 1.31 respectively. Men’s captain Ben is in his best form, finishing in 1.29. Our over 50s men were also impressive with many sub 1.30 times and Tony coming in first in 1.19. Congratulations to Luke Hilliard who achieved his target time of 1.12 which was publicly broadcast in an interview on Radio Newcastle. Perhaps his recommendation of haggis and pasta for breakfast might have some merit.

I could continue, but Ben will be wondering what on earth I’m doing with this report and when I’m going to get it published. Here’s the full list of our 50 GNR participants.

Unfortunately, Emily Allison was unable to finish the race. She became unwell with only 800m to go. She received treatment at the medical tent for several hours before being allowed to return home. She has recovered well and resume her running and hockey when she returns to university next week. We wish Emily all the best.

……….and now to cross country.
Thanks to everyone who has expressed their intention to run at least one of the North East Harrier League races. There are still a few who have not declared their interest, yet they have run well in past seasons. Drop me a line or else I’ll be onto you. First race is on 28 September at Thornley Hall Farm.
Good luck to our two representatives in the National Cross Country Championships taking place on Saturday 14 September in Telford – Jude Nutt and Dominic Kelso.
The next national XC event is on 2 November in Mansfield – the English Cross Country Association XC Relays. If anyone is interested in taking part, have a think about prospective teams. Teams of three females running 3km each and teams of four males running 5km each. If there’s sufficient interest, we could organise a bus/ self-drive mini bus.
