Angel View Races – Thursday 30 May

We had an excellent turnout of Elswick members at this friendly event organised by Low Fell Runners. The race takes place around the Angel of the North with runners crossing the finish line in the shadow of the impressive sculpture. In the 1.5 mile junior race, we had Harry Robson, Millie Robson and Nicholas Surtees-Brown. Both Millie and Nicholas scooped second place prizes in their age categories.

Not to be outdone by the juniors, the adults ran impressively over the rather wet and muddy 5.5 mile course. It was akin to a cross country course in parts and gleaming road trainers were rather soiled in appearance by the end of the evening. However, there were prizes in abundance for the Elswick crew and a lovely hot and cold buffet. Well done to all our runners: Jayne Cuskern (54.49, 133rd), Laura Shepherdson (5.54 107th) Kisi Hardman (47.02, 79th), Sydney Bungay (46.39, 77th, 1st under 17), Bella Russell (44.53, 62nd, first under 21), Roland Brown (42.41, 46th, second v50), Jonny Lowes (42.32, 45th), Felicity Smith (41.10, 33rd, fourth female, second v45), Jude Nutt (40.30, 27th, third female, first v45), Imogen Bungay (39.54, second female), Mike Russell (39.49, first V55). Great to see Tom Hanson his role as race adjudicator giving everyone a cheer. Full results below.

Druridge Bay Triathlon – Sunday 2 June
To keep up the training for an upcoming long distance triathlon, Mike took part in the standard distance triathlon at Druridge Bay, finishing fourth in his age category. Great to see Erin Blight winning the sprint distance aquathlon completing a busy week of competition, having represented the north east in the Intercounties final in Blackpool on Bank Holiday Monday.

Morpeth 10km – Sunday 2 June
The inaugural staging of this new look version of this summer 10km race took place on Sunday morning. Traditionally held in August from the cricket club, the race has been re-vamped by Run Through with an earlier date and new course which starts and finishes at the clock tower in the town centre. There were two waves of race starts. The A race for sub 40 minute runners (70 participants) began first and the B race started 20 minutes later for the other 628 competitors.

We were represented by seven runners. Running Race A, Mark Crowe finished in an impressive 37.03, 21st overall and 10th senior male. Some of our newer members took part in the B race and would have been delighted with their achievements some of them trying a 10km race for the first or second time. In 553rd position, Jonathan Morrell finished in 1.09.18, 34th v50. What impressive progress he has made since completing the None2Run programme earlier this year. Preparing for the GNR, Maxine finished in 59.28, 17th V50; Nigel Hollier was first V70 yet again, running a time of 54.47. Joanne Forster is obviously enjoying the longer distances, finishing in 50.57, second V35. Jack Graham found time to have a break from looking have his new arrival finishing in 51.22 and was third senior male in the B race. David Walton was first home in the B race, 66th overall and second V65 in a time of 45.05.
