Race Round Up 5th September to 11th September 2022

Sunday 11th September 2022

New Balance 5th Avenue 1 mile

The New Balance 5th Avenue Mile headed into its 41st year with another popular race along Museum Mile. Lace up, then run your best mile down a 20-block stretch of New York City’s Fifth Avenue that’s home to world-class museums and cultural institutions.

Mark McNally travelled across the pond to run in this famous mile event on 5th Avenue. He ran a time of 6.22 winning the over 75 male category, a huge well done to you Mark.

Here is what Mark had to say: After winning the 0/70 category in the NY Fifth Avenue Mile in 2018 (6.01) – I set myself the target of winning the 0/75 category in order to retain motivation. Happy to say I did so in 6.22 on Sunday 11 September.

Field size 8502

2526th Mark McNally 6.22 and 1st v75 male from 21

Great North Run

The return of the original route from Grandstand Road to South Shields that we have all come to love over the years. Seems an eternity ago since we ran that route prior to the pandemic, certainly an easier ending than last year’s finish on the Great North Road. With all running in memory of the HM Queen Elizabeth II with some raising money for a variety of charities, it was a special day out on the North East tarmac. From that fast first 5k where many can get carried away its hard then to find a rhythm as the course undulates its way towards South Shields where the crowds await. Many think that after that steep downhill where you turn left in front of the specially placed bales for the wheelchair athletes, the finish line should be visible!!! Still a good mile to go from there but with the road lined by ferocious roars each runner must feel goosebumps and a tingle, it’s a fantastic feeling as you stride towards the finish line. And without mentioning any names from our 50+ runners as I don’t want to miss anyone out as they all deserve a special mention, our club runners achieved some outstanding new half marathon pbs and age group placings which they can be proud of with a few new to the half marathon distance. It’s not all about pbs’s as many had personal goals to conquer, I’m sure everyone had a fantastic experience and did the very best you could do on the day whilst representing our club with pride.

Thanks to all the supporters, volunteers, snappers and our own Elswick pacers you were all incredible on such a special day, oggy oggy oggy!!!

Please click the results link below to see how our runners faired on the day from roughly 60,000 entrants.
