Race Round Up 2nd May to 8th May 2022
Wednesday 4th May 2022
NEMAA Open Road Relays Champs @ Bedeswell / Campbell Park Hebburn
The Relay Championships were open to all masters with or without NEMAA membership who are UKA registered first claim members of the club for which they are competing and who qualify for the championships by residence or birth in the counties of Cleveland. Durham, Northumberland and Teeside.
A night where Mike Russell forgot his runners and had to share Mark Turnbull’s! This meant a last-minute change to the v45 male line-up where teams of 3 ran 2 twisty and slippy after the rain laps of 1.5km on tamac paths around Bedeswell and Campbell Park. In fact due to the conditions underfoot there were a few slips and even fallers going into the bends and thankfully all of which were able to get back on their feet and carry on. As I was sat at home with the laptop upon my knee constantly checking the results it was great to see some very fast legs being ran by our ladies and men which I have noted down below. This resulted in our v45 ladies team and v45 men’s team both being on the podium in 2nd place with one of our v55 men’s team narrowly missing out on 3rd place by 9s in which they were only 20s off 1st place. Special note regarding Andrea! This was her first competitive outing after breaking a metatarsal at the final North East Harrier League fixture at Alnwick in March, good to see you back putting in a shift.
A note from NEMAA regarding medals won. These can be collected at the NEMMA track and field meeting on Monday 16th or at any other masters meetings

Saturday 7th May 2022
World Duathlon Champs (middle distance) Viborg, Denmark
The postponed from October 2021 due to the Pandemic Powerman Viborg is a 10 km run on a 2,5km loop in the old town of Viborg, 60 km bike on a hilly 30km loop around Viborg, and finally 10 km run in the old town.
Mike stated the day was scenic but tough on a breezy day in which he finished superbly in 11th position in the V50 category.

Sunderland City Runs Weekend
The first Sunderland city 10km was held in 2011 with just over 1500 taking part. 10 years later the Sunderland City Runs will welcome 5000 participants to the city streets in a celebration of running across a range of distances. You can choose a spring Half-Marathon, 10k, the Northern Spire 5K including the fast5k or the Active Sunderland Big 3K. There is something for everyone. Great to be part of one of the norths largest running events that races through the city and along the sea front, with two of its famous bridges providing a stunning backdrop to all 4 distances.

Sunderland City Runs Northern Spire 5k over a new fast course
Fully recommend this well organised event with a fantastic new enjoyable route making it a fast course as you cross over the Northern Spire Bridge 4 times which is great for spectators. This year a new elite fast5km was introduced to the race which has been previously held at the Three Sisters Circuit in Wigan.
Ben Hall and I ran together encouraging each along and simply by just knowing a teammate is next to you working hard, no words are needed. Mary put in a fantastic performance, she is a real trooper, very clear to see she enjoys her running and long may that continue
Field size 357
66th Richard Houghton 19.18
67th Ben Hall 19.26
120th Mary Hall 22.58

Sunday 8th May 2022
We were greeted by the sun in Sunderland for the half marathon and our first 10k of our internal road club championships of the season which did not disappoint with many pbs being claimed. A good challenging course with a few inclines and a head wind coming out of Roker Park at 7km played its part in a fantastic morning for our runners and the club. Was brilliant to hear the announcer at the start and finish line name dropping our club throughout the morning, it honestly felt like an Elswick takeover and you have all yourselves to thank as its you that makes this happen. Our ladies who placed as first placed team of Imogen, Robyn and Felicity finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th behind Aly Dixon. The men 2nd place team of Lewis, Andrew Ball and Steve although I’m not actually sure if there are team prizes however it sounds good. The times you runners are achieving now is amazing especially our vets, very inspiring to all! A note regarding Paul Robinson, this was his first 10k road race since 2016, good to see you back on the road Paul.
To the runners that took on the half, a huge well done to you on a warm morning, running the 10k was hard enough so you all did amazing to cross the line in times you did with Jonathan and Joanne picking up pbs. Even Dave Armstrong now of Newburn got in on the Elswick crack throughout the morning which secretly I know he misses.
Well done to all of Elswick Harriers that were spread across all distances this weekend, you were all awesome.
