It is with sadness that we have to report the passing of a prominent former member of our club, Peter Hammill.
An excellent sprinter in his youth, however, Peter’s true vocation was his work with young athletes at the club in from the 1960s through to the 1980s. He would be seen as the ever-present coach and mentor at cross country, road and track events. His bag would contain race numbers, pins, spare vests etc.
Peter was also a formidable and highly respected committee member. When I joined the club in 1959 it was Peter who stood out along with Norman Woodcock as being the key coaches who were always present at club nights, ready to give guidance and encouragement to young club members.
We offer condolences to his wife June and family at this sad time for them.
Harry Matthews.
