Town Moor Memorial 10k hosted by Heaton Harriers

PB Sunday on the moor!

On a day where both male and female course records were smashed to pieces by Calum Johnson (Gateshead Harriers) 28.26 and Sonia Samuels (Sale Harriers) 33.29 Elswick Harriers were also in line for a cracking day of pbs and prizes.

An absolute stunning turn out from Elswick Harriers with some incredible performances at this race which is included in our internal club championship. The event ran on the Town Moor in near perfect conditions and for once there was no wind on this overcast mild morning which played into the hands of our runners with many running personal bests. It was great to see so much support along the course not just from our Elswick supporters but from other clubs, the northeast running scene is just brilliant. This year the 10K race incorporated both the NECAA and NEMAA10K Men’s and Women’s Road Racing Championship which attracted a strong field to this years event.

It’s fitting to echo the words of Jan and Ken Heslop that very first Heaton Memorial Road Race took park in 1920 to remember those who died in the Great War. Heaton, in common with many other Northeast clubs lost many of their young men in the conflict between 1914 -18. Out of the 120 Heaton members registered at the time – 100 served in the forces – 12 never to return.

We thanked that those served us so we could live the way we do today by observing a minute’s silence prior the commencement of the 10k at 11:00hrs.
