Weekly round up: 20 March to 26 March 2023

Saturday saw our first Club Championship Race of the 2023/2024 season, 33 Elswick athletes took to the start line of the Newcastle University’s Cowbell 5km, on the Town Moor.

It was so nice to see all our training groups represented and seeing people returning from long spells out. The chilly wind didn’t dampen anyone’s sprints; it was a relaxed and fun atmosphere that settled the nerves nicely, everyone ran fantastic with many nabbing PB’s. Super running everyone!

First home for Elswick and another podium for Luke Hillard who finish third overall, he was rewarded with an Easter Egg and PB for his troubles – well done Luke! Our current Senior Men’s Club Champ, Danny Spoor was our second Elswick runner home with another impressive time.

The very talented and super speedy Imogen Bungay was first home for the ladies, finishing 22overall – brilliant work Imogen!

The run had many highlights, debuts in our Elswick vets, sprint finishes and PB’s but the togetherness at the end was my takeaway moment of the day 😊

Away from Newcastle, Club Secretary David Jones took on the Liverpool Skyline 10 Mile Road Race. It was worth the trip as Dave managed to bag an impressive PB running 67 mins for the 10 mile race – well done Dave!

Onto the track and over to Torun, Justin Durham picked up his first GBR vest competing in the World Masters Athletics Championships. Justin finished first in his heat clocking a time of 10:17:05 over 3000 meters. This time ranked Justin 12th overall in the in the M45 category. Amazing stuff Justin!

The Cowbell 5km wasn’t enough for Rob Lambert who donned the tri suit for the first time this season competing at the Sun City Duathlon. Rob finished 3rd in his category, 28th overall – well done Rob!

On the International stage again (for the fourth time), representing GBR in the European Triathlon Duathlon Championships in Venice-Caorle. Mike Russell recorded a sub 38 min 10km before a 40km cycle and final 5km to come home in 13^th place in his age category. Great going Mike!

And finally, we had a group of hardy cross country vets completing in the British Masters XC Championships with our Women picking up silver medals – a brilliant result on a soggy and energy sapping course.
